“Ideally, we would like survivors of sexual assault to report to the police and take a sexual assault kit at the hospital with a qualified person, as that is the best evidence,” said Inspector Terry Gillespie, Terrace RCMP.
"In 2019 only five per cent of women who experienced sexual assault reported it to police and nine per cent to victim services.
The data also shows sexual assault had the lowest rate of reporting of any crime in 2019, with only six per cent coming to police attention.
“From some of what I understand, some of the reasons why people don’t report is because they don’t feel like they will be believed. Also because maybe they are afraid of going to the hospital, having the collection of the rape kit completed,” Schmidt said.
Great post Rebecca. Thanks for bringing the issue to the forefront.
Vitally important post. Thanks Rebecca. Sharing. Disgraceful the behavior of the Kelowna police officer.
