Do you know what this is? This is a coach, (who I barely knew at the time), getting in my son’s face after he made a poor character choice on the field.
This coach threatened to bench my son if he ever made the same mistake again. This coach is correcting my son because he needed to be corrected.
Why did I take a picture instead of rushing to my son’s aid? Because he deserved the discipline, and I recognized that. Am I going to step in when a teacher or principal corrects him at school?
Am I going to step in when his future boss corrects him at his job? Of course not! So why would I step in when his coach is correcting him on the baseball field?
It’s no different. It makes me happy that there are coaches out there who aren’t afraid to provide the tough love that will help develop my son into the man I want him to be. Coaches that will help prepare him for the real world one day.
Carter is an excellent athlete, but he only got there by coaches pushing him to be his best. He’s an excellent athlete because he’s coachable. This isn’t the first time that a coach has gotten in his face and it probably won’t be the last.
I hope all his coaches will care enough to provide him with tough love.
To his past/present/future tough coaches out there: from the bottom of my heart, thank you for pouring into my son. You are truly appreciated and you don’t hear it often enough.
