Women, how many times has this happened to you?
My friend Jackson drove me to the dealership to retrieve my ranch truck which had been serviced.
The service attendant immediately assumed the truck belonged to my male companion and said, "Good morning sir. Have you come to pick up your vehicle?"
Jackson turned apologetically to me as I said, "What, am I invisible?
"The vehicle belongs to me"
In the company of a man, women are invisible. I've learned that it happened every day to every woman.
Later that day Penelope and I had dinner with Jackson and Jason at Marc Stucki's Steak and Seafood restaurant in Santa Barbara and Jackson told the story of my indignation of being invisible.
Jason smiled and said, "Now you know how people of color feel every day of their lives in a white privileged society."
I was speechless.
I was treated as though I wasn't there. I can only imagine the rejection felt by people of color.
I finally got it.
Do you?

I saw this first hand many times when I would go to town with my Mom on errands. She would stop in at the feed store and give the clerk a list of supplies. I remember once the clerk asked whether my Mom thought it wise to feed her horses grain and whether my Mom should call my Dad for clarification.
I was sure Mom was going to hit the guy. She gave him a mouth-full including words I had never heard before and when we were in the truck she turned to me and said, "Becky, don't you ever allow a man or anybody to treat you the way that asshole did to me."
Asshole was my first swear word which I would use on boys frequently.
This happens to my spouse constantly which infuriates her. One time, to try and prevent the inevitable, I stayed in the car while she sought out a car salesperson. After about 10 I entered, found her negotiating the vehicle she chose, sat and kept my mouth shut.
Love watching her negotiate things like this, or carpet, or.....
