The Independent Investigations Office, (IIO) can not claim it is an independent organization without including citizens from all walks of life.
"The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia that investigates all officer-related incidents that result in harm or death whether or not there are allegations of wrongdoing. The BC Prosecution Service must be satisfied that there is a likelihood for conviction based on evidence gathered."
The IIO claiming it is "independent" is inaccurate. They are former police officers & others retired from police related businesses. How many former school teachers, doctors, nurses, custodians etc. are there?
Another Mountie is being investigated, this time for the possible misuse of a police vehicle in the apprehension of a suspect.
I'm not sure what the purpose of this post was? Are you saying because the IIO use trained police investigators, the investigation is not fair? That's a great leap of logic! Police investigations are not fair to the police officer and notwithstanding lip service to the charge review standard, there certainly is a different standard when it comes to the police being charged in my humble opinion.
Washington State seems to have a handle on a cross section of society for their investigative bureau. California is remains in a shambles, scrambling to comply with a recent law compelling investigations.
The above concept is not new. Washington State where I taught has the following criteria for hiring. Note personnel are not all former law enforcement.
My rookie chased a suspect into the woods at night. The suspect attacked the officer and my rookie broke the man's collar bone with his 6 cell MagLite, a skill he mastered earlier that day from his training with me.
