The FBI has a long history of corruption dating back to the resignation of then director Burns.
We've all read and watched movies of the federal agency targeting 1930's gangsters and destroying illegal distilleries.
Under President Franklin Roosevelt, the agency shifted its attention to national security and intelligence investigations.
Edgar J. Hoover's FBI became notorious for political intelligence gathering, creating secret files on politicians and targeting Blacks and Gays, war protesters and left leaning political groups.
The public was unaware of Hoover's casuistry which permeated his 36 year reign until after his death in 1972.
Richard Nixon appointed L. Patrick Gray to replace Hoover but Gray quickly resigned after admitting to destroying Watergate related files.
The scandal stemmed from the Nixon administration's continual attempts to cover up its involvement in the June 17, 1972 break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Washington, D.C., Watergate Office Building.
William Sessions, a former judge was appointed by President Ronald Regan but fired by President Bill Clinton for using FBI resources for personal trips and home renovations.
President Barack Obama appointed James Comey Jr. in September 2013.
Controversy remains regarding the reasons Republican Donald Trump fired Comey in 2017. Was it his opening an investigation into Hillary Clinton 2 months before the 2016 election or did his dismissal center around Trump needing to relieve pressure on himself created by his actions.
Andrew McCabe lasted from May 9, 2017 to August 2, 2017, 85 days being fired by Trump. McCabe claims his dismissal was instigated by his initiating an investigation on Trump.
McCabe was replaced by Christopher Wray by Trump and was accepted by Democrat President Joe Biden.
